INVESTIGATION STEPS
A few weeks after the Haunted exhibition, my team and I went along to hear
the witnesses account
in more detail. The first thing that struck me was how incredible their
encounter was and I was
amazed that no one had ever investigated the sighting at the time when it
happend. The second
thing was that the couple were obviously a hard working, down to earth,
very genuine couple who
had two polite, inteligent children and we had no doubt that their account
was completely true as
they remembered it. The Ghoulsonfilm team decided that the case was definately
worth investigating.
The first thing we did was to visit the park ourselves to see if we could
re-trace the witnesses steps
from their description. Taking a digital camera with us to get some shots
for research we walked the
whole area of Taylor Park to get a sense of the place. Karen, our sensitive
tried to get a feel for any
paranormal activity. Then, as we walked past the wasteland next to Golf
course, Karen suddenly got
a strong cold chill, which she described as electricity running through
her body. Later, when we
studied the digital photographs, we found a strange figure-like anomalie
on one of them.
The image could simply be an odd effect, but it is odd that it was taken
at the exact spot of where
Karen felt an eerie chill.
During January 2003, we
invited the witnesses to meet up with us at Taylor Park so that
we can re-trace their steps in detail and get some measurements and time
data. On the day we
decided to split the couple up so that we could see if anything else was
remembered. It turned out
that it was a worthwhile idea as indeed some things were thrown up that
were previously forgotten
and other points which were uncertain were now ironed out. We re-enacted
the event using a
female member of the team to represent the spectre using the witnesses themselves
as directors.
From this we deduced that the distance the witnesses were from the spectre
was 25ft.
The approximate length of time the apparition lasted was no less than 45
seconds.
It was clear that this sighting was no hallucination or trick of the light.
The fact that there are two
witnesses to the same thing rules out both of those explanations. Also we
deduced the approximate
time they left the Grange Park pub and the approximate time of the sighting.
The next aim of the case now became to research the background of Taylor
Park to see
if we could find out who the Grey Lady might be, and to try and work out
the exact date of the
witnesses sighting as they could not remember.
We took a step back to take a look at the story in dtail to see what we
could say we actually new.
They witnesses said that it was a bright moonlit night but definately not
a full moon.
They remember the weather being very mild for the time of year which was
1986.
They felt it was at the end of February and on a Thursday because they remembered
it was after a
busy night at the pub and the regular busy night was aThursday night.
We looked up full moon charts for 1986 during the month of February and
it showed up two
possible dates. 20th & 27th February, which were both Thursdays and
on those days it would have
been not quite a full moon. On the 20th, the moon would be coming into a
full moon and on the 27th
the moon would be coming out of a full moon. I also checked old 1986 weather
almanacs to see
if the witnesses description fitted. It did, perfectly.
After exploring all other methods
to try and find the exact date, I decided that a vigil on both nights would
have to be held to cover any possible occurence of the Grey Lady showing
again on the
same date as does happen on rare occasions.
With regards to who the Grey Lady might be - we are still digging as are
many other Ghost groups.
